The Devil's Advocate
This film tells what goes on behind the scenes in the impossible defense of the Belgian serial killer, Marc Dutroux. His main attorney, the star of the Bar, Xavier Magnée, has actually accepted the presence of our camera besides him during the preparation and progress of the assizes trial of the murderer of young girls; but on the condition that nothing must be broadcast before the verdict. The attorney, who wanted to burst the truth over the Dutroux case, found himself for months facing the inhumanity of his client, the suffering of victims, an incomplete (preliminary) investigation and an imperfect trial. Our camera was the privileged witness of his passionate outbursts, of his disappointments, of his fits of anger and of his refusal to yield to resignation. By turns a devil's advocate, a procurator of the Belgian society or a spokesman of the victims, he threw himself wholeheartedly into the battle. Will the man and the attorney come out of this ordeal with permanent wounds or with a clear conscience
